We decided we would meet for future sessions so I left all my stuff (bass, amp and drum set) at his house. Now the guy has been unavailable, will not return my calls and my equipment is still at his house inside a secure gated community which I can not even get into. Should I call the law? How can I get my gear back?

How has the guy been "unavailable"? Is the phone disconnected, or he is just not returning your calls? Is it possible to use the friend that introduced you to act as your messenger, to help you get your stuff back? Or is there a problem there too? If there is, you may have been scammed.
Yes. I do think you could ask the police for help, not sure whether they can do anything though. May have to file in small claims court - sometimes the threat of a court proceeding is enough to get parties to act.
Good luck and hope you get your stuff back.

If you can't get in tough with him, contact the police. Make sure you have all the info they might need about your property, the location, and the situation.

First, you might leave him a message telling him you will call the police if he doesn't return your things within 24 hours.
