Find a friend you trust & practice with him or her. It can even be a brother or sister. Just stay home a few times and practice to some music. Get your confidence up and then hit the clubs.
You can also check around your community and see if anyone is offering dance lessons. It may sound weird, but it really happens. My local college offers Salsa dancing as a class.
You could also see if anyone is selling DVDs that teach the dances your interested in. Once you get some practice in, I think you'll be fine.
And, as always, go out with a few friends. You will always be more comfortable with a group.
Good Luck!

I say you go out and move to the beat. Do whatever feels good, gets you swinging to the song. I am very 'dancing-challenged,' but that never stopped me from hitting the floor and dancing anyway. Have I made a fool of myself? I guess, but I don't care. I had fun. And, in the process, danced with girls I would not have had the nerve to ask otherwise... Have fun!

Awwwww. I was the same way when I was a teenager, and to be honest I never grew out of it and I felt the same way that you feel. I am a great dancer but always was to shy to dance in public. Just start dancing around some of your close friends or siblings and see if they say anything about how you dance. Dance in front of a mirror and watch yourself. The kind of dances that are out now, it don't take much skill to do.
Good luck!

all i can do is offer opinions. Im shy at that too so maybe i can help.so far ive been to 2 dances. i was asked to dance at each dance. the first dance, it was a slow dance which i found easy yet nerve-racking. the second was a fast dance and i didnt know what to do and i looked like a dam fool. so it really depends whether you give a dam what people think. hope this helps!if u want to dance u should just ask someone. i know its hard but its the only way.

Forget about what you look like... just have fun, move the way the music tells YOU to. No one out there on the floor has any better moves! If you want to dance with some structure to it, get into Country Western, line dances and square dances!! Have FUN...
Hope you shake 'em down!!

Try going with a friend and just going into a corner and having fun by yourself... eventually you'll loosen up and gain confidence in yourself, when that happens you'll feel a lot more comfortable dancing with everyone else.
Also, try to go to a club more than a formal dance, that way nto as many eyes will be on you :)

Babe, take it from the person that has two left feet... Dance your heart away. Who cares who's watching, let yourself go and enjoy the time you have here on earth.. dancing is fun no matter if you know or not...

So learn! Practice in front of your mirror. Even the practice is fun, BTW. Dancing is the second best type of physical exertion known to woman. Get someone you trust to teach you...do it...you'll be glad you did.
