It is good to be open-minded. It is practised in the Old Testament. Muslims claim that they do it out of social necessity, with a maximum of four wives permitted. Allegedly, it was practised in Ireland and Germany beyond the year 1000.

HOWEVER: What do you think of the following quotation:

"In spite of Brigham Young's grandiose statement "The only men who become gods or even the sons of God are those who enter into polygamy," he was henpecked to a fare-thee-well. One of his 27 wives, Amelia Folsom, demanded and got a private carriage, a big house, and a box at the theater. When he gave her a sewing machine and she saw it wasn't the Singer she had asked for, she threw it at him."

Realistically, how could one man like Brigham Young, who held several offices and made frequent business trips out of town, satisfy 27 wives at one time? (without a little help?)

Don't you think that "henpecked to a fare-thee-well" is a cute expression?

Polygamy is/was accepted by all religions without exception. The Catholic church made it "wrong" about 1750 and the "European Jews" slightly earlier while the "Oriental Jews" maintained it until the early 1900's.
An individuals idea of whether it is acceptable or not depends on whether you are male or female, and the moral & religious upbringing the person has had.
As for satisfying 27 wives, that would be difficult, although there are times in a womans' life when she does not want or cannot perform sex, i.e. in the last month of pregnancy and for 6-8 weeks following birth of a child.

I think polygamy is fine, as long as all the parties involved are of age to make that choice and all agreeing upon it. If that is how they want their personl relationships to be, good for them. We have no say as to how any one else conducts their personal affairs than they do to ours.

As for Mr. Young and his 27 wives... it's likey he wasn't all that concerned with the satisfaction of his wives. He probably visted more than one a night. I'm sure they had some kind of schedule. I read somewhere where a polygamist woman said that living this way (with all the alone time) gave the women the chance to really get to know herself and learn to stand on her own. Maybe thats how they make themselves feel better about seeing your husband once a month.

It's a wonderful fantasy, but for most of the world, realistically, it would wreak havoc and trash whatever decency existed in family life. Some muslims and old-school believers in tribal law might still cling to this backward practice, but unless they're wealthy and/or own lots of property, it will be a long (or short-lived) downward spiral starting from the intention to love and be loved.

Here's the problem: there's nothing wrong with having multiple spouses if you truly love and care for them. Unfortunately guess what happens... there aren't enough women to go around. Boys become driven from their home by men who don't want competition. If women had multiple husbands that might help balance it out but otherwise...

in theory, I dont really see how its anyone else's business. However, I can also tell you that the chances of it working out long term are slim- especially when you consider that the divorce rate in the US is so high. I would hate to see what happens to a polygamist man that gets a divorce and has to pay alimony to 3 or 4 wives... UGH!!!

When King David Lusted after Bath Sheba and had her husband killed after impregnating her, God told David that He (God) gave David all of those wives. Since Both in Malachi and in Hebrews we see that God does not change, and we know that Jesus was with God in the beginning and is God, then we know that God never stopped allowing the practice and actually condones it.

I think polygamy is fine as long as you only have one spouse.
