What is the difference between the two sentences above?

I was born on the farm.

on would be similiar be saying you were born on the farm property
in would mean you were a part of the farm itself

"I was born on the farm." is correct. If you were to say, "I was born IN the farm house." that would also be correct. However, saying you were born IN the farm is an error in syntax. This is one of those things that you just have to learn through experience.
Strangely enough saying,"I was born IN the city." would be correct. Notice the difference in the acceptable preposition IN.

If you were born in the human quarters, on the farm.

If you were born in a pen, stable, or barn, in the farm.
