it means someone to talk to, get support from, somone who will listen and love and accept unconditionally. i don't ever abuse that word.

Yes, so often, people will say they are your friend, when indeed they are not. Perhaps they simply don't know what friend means. All of your answers were so thoughtful. NakasEvi was beautifully poetic & expressed how I feel. When I was very, very young, I considered acquaintances were friends. Rather whimsical of me! Now that I want to spend my time with "special" people, I've gotten very selective; I have a handful of "true" friends, & many acquaintances. So much truth has been said here, I'll only say: A friend is someone who knows you well, accepts & understands you. A friend is there for you. (Everyone needs someone sometime.) & you are the same with them. It is a rare, beautiful "mutuality."

A friend is someone to whom you may pour the contents of your heart. They will gently sift the words, keep what is worthy and with a gentle breath they will blow the rest into the wind.
I have many acquaintance's and very few true friendships.

i read this somewhere before, can't remember who said it but it has always stuck with me... a true friend is someone who knows the song in your heart and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words...
