Since a big storm we had here in December - the power went out for 3 days-the temp in the tank went from 75 to 55 and when the power came back on went up to 83degrees. ever since then, one of my 7 inch long ciclids has been at the top of the tank.
She is still alive but if she swims down to the bottom she POPS right back to the top like she has air in her. I want to put her out of her misery -- but how do I do this without her suffering and me grossing out!??

I ALSO FORGOT TO SAY THAT SHE IS ALWAYS ON ONE SIDE AND THE SIDE THAT IS ALWAYS UP IS STARTING TO PROTRUDE OUT OF THE WATER SO SHE IS KIND OF BENDING. I PUT FOOD IN FRONT OF HER AND SHE EATS.

Im sorry but clogging the toilet made me laugh. Maby because the same thing has happend to me.

Now to business. It's nice to hear you care enough for your fish to do this, but if its eating I would not cull it. It wants to live. If its been alive since december I would not kill it. Hopefully im not to late

As I posted to anouther persons question. I had a large goldfish with a swimbadder problem. Its not incurable!!!

It may not work but its worth a shot. Take 2 aquarium nets and prop the fish up currectly in the water and create some sort of rig to hold it there for an hour.

This correctly fixed my fish that was swimming upsidedown. Also aggitation of the waters serface and a water cleaning could not hurt either.

If none of that works try a hospital tank and some medications for swimbladder infections. (Althogh I must tell you IMO they dont work very well)

If all else fails you dont have to cut your fishes head completely off. You can just sever the spinal colum below it's head. Use a pair of pinking shears. Or have a friend do it while you dig a whole in the back yard.

Otherwise a frozen water ice dip will quickly kill it. Just make sure there is enough water so its can go into the bucket. And make it very very cold. Dont want it to feel anything.

Sorry if I sound cold. I do know what your going threw I had the exact thing happen to a whole collection of aquariums I had durring a really bad power outage.

Power was out for 4 day's in 2000 durring a terrible Ice storm.

We were freezing so the fish were really bad off. None died till the power came back one thou. Thats the funny thing.

Im going to vent some more. Ive never told this story online to anyone, lol.

Deathtoll: One aquarium of Barbed Tetras, One aquarium of Silver Blacktailed sharks, One Saltwater Clown & annenime, One 70gallon aquarium of Oscars, One aquarium of Guppies, One aquarium with my Jack Demsy, One aquarium of Neon tetra's, One aquarium of female betta's, One aquarium of various Fancy Goldfish ( And one aquarium with odd's and ends fish.

Surrvivors: One orange Chiclid, One Albino Channel Catfish.

I UNDERSTAND :)

if his gill plates are actually not shifting, eyes are going white, and once you touch him, he would not pass, then he's ineffective. you're saying best each and everything..if that replaced into genuine, you probable would not of misplaced him and not using a reason. precisely how replaced into he being housed, what replaced into with him? If he remains alive, he might have a undesirable case of swim bladder sickness, which isn't a sickness yet a symptom. of the two undesirable water or an inner an infection or contained with regards to fancy physique types, genetics.

Her swim bladder is gone. She will not recover from this :( There are a few humane ways to cull a fish. One is to put it in a container with just enough water to cover the fish and put it in the freezer.

Another is to take the fish out of the tank and (prepare yourself) chop its head off. Its quick and painless.

I am sorry for your loss on the fish :(

ewww, DON'T flush it down! That's gross and it really hurts the fish! There is this thing you can do with Alkaseltzer and then freezing it. But I'm not real sure of the way to do it. Maybe some will know more about it.

Just leave the fish. I have thought the same when ive had fish dying, should i kill it myself? but you shouldnt, just let it die on its own, then remove it from the tank.and dont flush a big fish, its sad, but put it in the garbage. It WILL clog your toilet, believe me, i know.

Don't be too quick to assume she is in misery. If she has made it this long she will probably live much longer. But if you are certain this is the right thing for you to do here's a link that will help

Put her in ice water...it sounds cruel but it is the most humane way to do it.

this might help:
Freezing is a commonly used method for euthanizing warm water fish. To freeze your fish, freeze water in a small bag until the ice is slushy. Then place your fish in the water and continue to freeze it.

Carbon dioxide can be used to euthanize fish. Alka Seltzer is a popular source for carbon dioxide to be released in water.
You may need to decapitate or freeze the fish afterwards to ensure death.

If she's still alive and eating, just leave her be! What's gonna make you feel better? Having a sick fish, or killing your pet?
