16.00*.40=6.40
16.00-6.40=9.60

16.00*.65=10.40
16.00-10.40=5.60

so, 9.60-5.60=$4.00 saved

(a). 40% off the regular price means that it sold for 9.60. 65% off the regular price means that it sold for $ 5.60. Anyway the difference in percentages is 25 percent, which for $16, also indicates $ 4.

Mandy bought it for 40% off $16 = (1-0.4)*16 = $9.60
next day it was (1-0.65)*16 = $5.60
So she could have saved $9.60 - $5.60 = $4.00

Answer a)

a) $4.00

@40% off
$16 x .40 = $6.40; $16.00 - $6.40 = $9.60

@65% off
$16 x .65 = $10.40; $16.00 - $10.40 = $5.60

$9.60 - $5.60 - $4.00 in Savings!
