We were talked into a few goldfish today and once we got home we realized the tank won't be ready for 24-hours. Can the goldfish survive in the plastic bag for 24-hours? What do we do with them until the thank is ready!

You can put the fish in the tank as soon as everything is running and you know you have no leaks. Assuming the water was dechlorinated of course. But to answer the question, a day if they aren't crowded and there is lots of air in the bag. Less water and more air is best for them in a bag. You can always open the bag to exchange the air and retie it.

Hopefully you don't have too many fish with a new tank. If so you will have serious ammonia problems to deal with for the next few weeks. Here's a link to a page that will explain what you can expect to be going on in your new tank for the next few weeks and how best to deal with it. Hope this helps.

Also a tip, don't place an airstone into the bag. This makes it worse.

But if your saying your tank is not ready for 24 hours because you want it to begin to cycle you might as well put the fish in it.

Sure this is not a good idea but better than the bag. Just treat your aquarium as if it was a big golfish bowl. Make large water changes till your Ammonia and Nitrites go down. Thats pretty much your only choice.

Buy some cycling chemicals that add good bactiria to the water, and if you can go to a really good petstore that always have nice clean tanks and ask them for some of the gravel from one of thier golfish tanks. Or if you have any other tanks at home or a friend with healthy fish tanks get the gravel there (keep it wet this is important).

This will "seed" your tank even faster than the chemicals.

But really I would get them out of the bags if thats why your waiting. Amonia will build up in them very very fast.

A goldfish, or any fish for that matter, wont survive in a plastic bag for 24 hrs, unless its a 2 litre plastic bag and has been filled up with oxygen while packing. Do the needful, as you now have the information.

Pet store associates, myself included, always inform a customer that buying their fish should be their last errand. I would never leave them in a bag for over an hour. Probably less than a quart of water will quickly become filthy with the waste of three goldfish. Why did you purchase them?

No they will not survive in a bag for 24 hours due to lack of oxygen.

What you can do is get a large bucket and put some water and water conditioner in it and they will be ok there until put in the tank.

Not very long becuase they need food and more air. Also if the water gets to a certain temp, they may die. I'd keep him or her in a plastic bowl or big enough cup untill you get a fish bowl.
