I honestly have to say i think it was TRON.
1980-81 Disney and what would later become Pixar, worked together to build a movie that was shot totaly on a black back ground.
Every set, light, special effect, color, was added by computers.
This was a time when doing so was all by code. A technician could not see what was on the screen in front of him untill it was on film.
A computer could not handle showing these graphics.
If it wasnt for TRON and what was accomplished with so little, a lot of movies would not have been made.

Tron would not have existed without technologies invented during the making of 'Star Wars' (1977). Tron was a disappointment and a flop at the box office back then. It had a lot of ambition though. The ambition of Tron DID INDEED influence generations of movie makers to come. They just came up with better techniques and styles. 'Innerspace' was considered the better of the 3 (including 'The Black Hole') that came out at that time. But if you watch Innerspace now, it looks really bad. At least watching Tron now you smile at the obvious mistakes because you do realise how hard it was for them to do that then and how much easier it is now for even someone like me or you to achieve the same effects, even better, because of the use of operating systems and the software enabled to run on them. I'm just a big fan of Industrial Light & Magic and knowing Disney was setting up to compete against them, I had to keep my loyalties intact...lol So I am kinda prejudiced in my opinions here! Industrial Light & Magic, as a whole, have truely changed the way movies are made. To this day. :-)

"Birth of a Nation". The 1915 film was the first to use an epic storyline, intercut scenes, a moving camera, shifting perspective (varying camera heights and angles), large scale special effects (battle scenes, smoke), color (some scenes were tinted by hand), and a variety of other innovations that virtually created what we know of as cinema.

Citizen Kane.
Many of the cinematography tricks used came from that film.
65 years later, the film still has an impact
