I've just become used to typing correctly. I mean, sure, occasionally I'll abbreviate something just to save time a little. But the public school system in America is just horrendous.

Years ago when we were in school, people read books, had spelling tests, and wrote papers. At that time, there were only 6 TV stations on VHF in Los Angeles, so we didn't watch much TV. We didn't have video games, record players and radio were just about it as far as listening to music. No iPods, computers, or videotapes were even invented yet. We only had state testing in second and fourth grade, so teachers didn't "teach to the test" the way they do now. We went to school for more hours and more days of the year. Most moms stayed at home. Kids weren't overscheduled with extracurricular activities, so we had more time for homework.
Parents must stay on top of their childrens' education, just as they have always had to. Studies have shown that the more a parent is involved, the better the kids do in school.
I was a single parent whose child attended magnet schools. He can spell, punctuate correctly, write a coherent paragraph (actually, WAY beyond paragraphs), and loves to read BOOKS. He never needed "remedial work", either.
I was able to keep a very close eye on his education, and helped him with his homework, but NEVER did it for him. I told him time and again that the better he did in school, the more choices he would have later. Fortunately, he listened!
By the way, have you seen the spelling, grammar and punctuation skills some of the so-called teachers on this site? Abominable!

Unfortunately we live in a society where we are rapidly becoming high tech and where people now would rather shorten a particular word or words such as thanx instead of thanks and u instead of you rather than taking the time to spell out the complete words. Other times I don't think that people are really preoccupied with their grammar, and since this website is essentially anonymous, not many people take the time nor do they care to make sure that whatever it is that they ask is intelligible and makes sense. Many times I have had to guess and assume that I am reading a question correctly. Also, keep in mind that not to many people read the newspaper anymore or read anything other than magazines or instruction manuals for high tech gears or accesories that they purchase for their ipods or phones. It is a shame but what can you do?

Spelling & punctuation are my pet peeves as well. Drives me crazy when I look at my kids' homework and it is sloppily written (not only the grammar part, but the handwriting, too)!!
I complained about this to my sister (at the time, her stepson was in high school) and she told me that kids rely on using the computer's "Grammar" tool on Word to do the correcting (which, as we know, is not 100% effective!).
As for using "short cuts" during text messagine (like POS--Parent over Shoulder), I think that carries over into emails and such.
I also know that teachers don't seem to care about spelling and punctuation too much either, because the "high-stakes" tests (like the WASL in WA State) do not score against them often. Teachers are being told to teach their students to pass the test and to heck with everything else!! For example, a kid could say that the answer to 2+2 is 5 (which is wrong), but as long as the kid has a "reasonable" explanation in writing, then he gets points for it--never mind that the numerical answer is wrong!! (This actually happened on our state's test!! Not kidding here!!!)
Guess it is up to the parents to make sure that our children learn proper grammar and language before they enter the workforce. I work as a transcriptionist, and I tell my kids that if I handed in my work how they do their homework, I'd be fired!

I am in college on my way to becoming a teacher and writing skills is one of the things I want to work on most with my students. Writing is an art, but it seems like writing is being taught to students as something different. They are not taught to have an ear for making things look and sound good. Because of this, they see writing as something they have to do, something that doesn't require much effort. This leads to the lack of correct spelling and punctuation in writing and online.

A German Shepherd can make the proper relatives puppy, because it has a organic instinct to guard its' relatives, and they are keen inexperienced persons too- especially obedient. With the right volume of stimulation, you mustn't favor to crate practice your domestic dog, though in the adventure that your spouse and youngsters don't have time to be in, in this time, that is probably no longer a sturdy idea that you may want to get a canines. quite a canines of such intelligence which calls for top quantities of stimulation. that's a recipe for destruction, and caging for such quite some hours a week is previous humane, though it ought to look smart to you. I, in my opinion, do in assessment to small dogs, though in the adventure that your spouse and youngsters are adamant you're prepared for a canines, you need to get something that calls for little workout or stimulation. I hate to assert it, yet, a 'dumb' dopey type of canines, it really is only satisfied to have your interest. All dogs favor stimulation, and housebreaking a minimum of, which calls for you to be in the final public of their day. And as you do not have the time to stimulate the domestic dog with walks AND play for the detailed era of time the domestic dog ought to favor, even better so as an individual. i don't think of your spouse and youngsters are waiting for a domestic dog, as you're not to any extent further only proscribing it gradual with the domestic dog, yet you're doing away with the relaxing circumstances it might nicely be having as a domestic dog.

I agree. I've about had it with that texting crap people call sentences. I can't even understand half of it. Other stuff i think people just tend to be careless about. Spelling is one of my annoying habits. It really bugs me when someone spells something wrong and thinks nothing of it.
