If you wanted to show some of the reasons people thought Stalin would help Russia, You could write abou his New Economic Policy. For Stalin's more negative effects, you could write about what life was lide in Russia after the Iron Curtain was drawn and the Cold War started.

I would suggest:
1) Although 1940 is a bit late, the trial of General Tuchachevsky during the purges of the late 1930s: his was the most important arrest and execution of thousands of Russian military officers. This destroyed the quality leadership of his army before Hitler attacked. Stalin also executed generals such as Popov for poor battlefield performance.
2) The surrender of the German 6th army at Stalingrad in February 1943- the most important battle of WW2.
3) Stalin's refusal to exchange his son, a prisoner of the Germans, in 1944.
4) Stalin signing a non-aggression treaty with Japan in April 1941- he thought this would prevent the Germans attacking him and he danced at the railway station in Moscow when the Japanese ambassador left (a book called 'The Grand Delusion' is a good source for this).
5) You could have Stalin launching the new T34 tank in 1940/41. This tank was very good and came as a huge shock to the Germans when they came up against it.
6) Stalin preparing to leave Moscow, with the German army at the gates of the city, in December 1941. He was convinced to stay- and Moscow was held.

Defense of Moscow during WW2. Said he would not leave the city and something like fighting to the last man or to the end. The Germans made it to the outskirts of the city before being turned back.
