Stainless doesn't rust either. So if it's rusty, it's not stainless. Not all RV stovetops are stainless. Many are enameled. It's possible too, that yours was chrome or nickel plated, and that's what you see parts of, between the rusty areas. Depending on where you live, it's possible to find RV salvage lots, and you could pick up a replacement stovetop there, cheap. Even if it were stainless, sanding certainly isn't going to "bring back" a shine! You'd need to buff it. If you don't pick up a replacement, I'd sand it well, coat it with Naval Jelly, red oxide primer, and then a good coat of epoxy paint. Give it about a week to dry hard before trying to use it, and it should hold up well. After it's dried, there should be no danger of its catching fire. (Of course, you want to remove the stovetop, and take it out of the RV for sanding and re-painting. Don't just spray paint on the thing with pilots on -or while trying to cook dinner!)

There is a paint for stove tops but I am not sure if it will stick to stainless or not. You would have to ask the people who sell the paints for stoves. Probably available at a paint or appliance store. I am not sure if you can get them in cans or if they only come in touch up little jars. Good luck with it.

They actually have appliance paints now. I would suggest going to your nearest Home Depot. I saw someone on HGTV repaint a stove and a refrigerator with this kind of paint.

You can't paint stainless.
