while there is clearly nothing free here... only Americans that never been outside of US can say that, because other countries are so much more free than America! Come on, people, you can't even drink on the streets or say your opinion without worring that someone will sue you for that.

I live here and i don't think it is a free Country at all, not sure when it was, but not in my life time! Are we turning communist? The federal and state make our decisions, we have to abide by, our land is not free and you can not do what you want with your land ( or house )when people get fired from jobs that they have worked at for many years, because they smoke ( at home ) what is that? The schools think they own our kids, shall i go on? It may be more free then others, but certainly not free!

Read up on U.S. law. There are a lot more freedoms than restrictions. You can't drink on the streets because our goal is to prevent crime, not provoke it. Another thing, it's one thing to sue someone, but another thing entirely to win your case. Yes, I agree that you can sue anyone for anything. However, you must prove your point. That isn't easy. Also, we have had to increase national security due to 9/11, so that makes it seem that we've lost some liberties too. One thing that you shouldn't do is compare the U.S. government to other governments because we have more enemies than any other nation. I believe these factors influence your opinion. I hope I was able to inform you to the best of my ability.

I have the freedom to, work live,go to school, worship where I want. I can stand on a street corner and speak out against the government or protest anything I want. How many other countries can you do that ? Oh yeah, the freedom to leave the country if I don't like it here

I agree, but with our law system it is really had to get throw in jail or somthin' just for saying your opinion, unless you say "I think president bush should be killed". Then you might get in trouble with national security or other security people. And with the drinking thing, most people should know where to stop and that. Heres what i say "go to a bar, get enough drinks to forget about your problems in life. Hail a taxi, refrain from killing him when he almost kills you and himself in a car wreack, get home and go to sleep!" then wake up with a massive headache. Also we have freedoms in other stuff to like religion, and fair trials. but the religion thing can be bypassed if you kill somebody for the sake of religion.

I'll refer to the cliche phrase of late: If you don't like living here, don't. Now, I'm in America and I just FREEly expressed my opinion. No one is suing me as of yet. As far as drinking on the street? Well, that argument is a little out of touch with the definition of freedom within a nation, so I don't know what to tell you.

Janis Joplin used to sing "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose"
yes, the song was written by Kris Kristoferson.

Maybe with that meaning of free.

i agree...in fact i just love the "land of oppurtunity" one just as much......rubbish ...where everyone can be president...um no...only rich people who are born there can be!!!!! (unlike here in New Zealand where farmers and teachers can run the country!!!
Free expression!!! Really? When I visited there I found it VERY american focused. In New Zealand they show you the other side of the story more and are more critical of the government....or at least we see the negative more here.....
AND you get sued for dropping coffee on yourself!! or you can;t kiss your wife on sundays in certain states and other TRUELY weird laws (like not tieing giraffes to lamppoles, or fishing from your car......surely thats sooooooo restrictive..ha ha)
Americans need to visit some truley free countries!

I know right. What is up with saying it's a free country. I mean I have to pay for everything I buy. It's totally f'd up.

Good question. I have often wondered the same thing.

If not for that darned Lee Greenwood song, we might have avoided this misconception. Alas, music stirs the imagination!
