If you only make one stop ... let it be Crater Lake.

Cool. Well, since you have 10 days, scoot on out to the coast and take up Hwy 1 at the Marin Headlands and travel north along some of the most scenic coastal stretches in the country. When you get up to Yreka, head east on Hwy 277(?) towards Mount Shasta. Camp at Castle Crags State Park in Dunsmuir and play in the Sacramento River that runs through there, or hike up into the Crags for some awesome bouldering fun. Continue north up Hwy 5 into Orgeon, visit Crater Lake. As you get to the northern border of Oregon, spend a day exploring the Columbia River Gorge and the amazing system of waterfalls there. Crossing over into Washington, you can visit the Mt. Adams Wilderness. As you approach Seattle, you can drive through Mt. Rainier National Park for some awesome vistas.

If you prefer an inland route, head north from Sacramento past Clear Lake and through Mt. Lassen National Park. That is one beautiful drive, just awesome. From there you can hook up with Mt. Shasta and the rest.

If you do decide to go up Hwy 1, check into Bed and Breakfast places along your route.

Hope that's given you something to go on. Bon Voyage.
