If you need to do it NOW and are expecting guests...throw everything out of place into a box and put it elsewhere like a closet.
If you mean how to clean a room efficiently...carry a couple of small boxes or pails or a sectioned bin with you to divide what goes where as you pick up. Then take the stuff to where it belongs and put it away. Don't forget the garbage can in the middle of the floor either for newspapers or other garbage.

I have two children and there have been times when you couldn't see the floor in there room. I would take garbage bags and put everything in them and sort through one bag at a time. Doing it that way makes it feel less overwhelming.

Clear off surfaces; clean them w/ Windex or Pledge.
Discard paper, magazines (are you REALLY gonna read them again?), and trash.
Take dirty dishes to kitchen.
Arrange pillows where they belong. Fold up afgans or throws and set neatly aside.
Run the vacuum.

make sure you have a lot of coloured boxes with lids that you can throw stuff into if you don't have time to sort it out and under bed containers as well. use all available space behind and under things. in cupboards, drawers etc.
