Now this is from an old man that has little knowledge about alot. As I understand it, Ionization filters air through electrical charges. Takes particles out of the air via static electricity. Those particles apparently carry smells, smoke and other odors. The resulting smell will be what ozone smells like. Basically the same smell of an electrical shock into moist air. Also smells like a close lightning strike during a storm. They probably work fine from what I have seen, but generally aren't cheap. Maybe they don't even cover a very large area. Sorry I couldn't help more.

The purpose is to put a charge in the air to remove pollen and other impurities in the air. It will give off an pzone smell that will go away shortly after it is started up. They work pretty good. I have one in my car and one on my hot tub, the house has an electronic air filter on it.
