Martin Cooper is the guy who tested and created the idea of the cellphone network. But Motorola Invented the cellphone in 83 like the other guy said he is absolutely correct it was $3500 for the phone which only stored 10 phone #'s and had 60 minutes talk time on a single charge and 12 hours of standby it was nicknamed quote "The Brick phone" I did my highschool term paper on cellphones so I recently had to dig for this info. And I happened to find out that a "Basic" calling plan for the dyna tac cost $1.00 per minute of talk time and a typical bill back then cost $470/month so only rich guys could afford them.

The mobile phone wasn't really 'invented'. It wasn't a bright idea some individual came up with, it was an obvious development which was worked on for many years before it became practical.

The idea was proposed in the US in 1971 by AT&T. The first mobile phone was demonstrated in 1973 but they didn't come to the commercial market until Motorola introduced the DynaTAC in 1983 for $3500.

From Wikipedia:-

On April 3, 1973, Motorola employee Dr. Martin Cooper placed a call to rival Joel Engel, head of research at AT&T's Bell Labs, while walking the streets of New York City talking on the first Motorola DynaTAC prototype. Motorola has a long history of making automotive radio, especially two-way radios for taxicabs and police cruisers.

In 1978, Bell Labs launched a trial of first commercial cellular network in Chicago using AMPS

The Mobile phone is one of the most used pieces of equipment today. The concept of using hexagonal cells for mobile phone base stations was invented in 1947 by Bell Labs engineers at AT&T and was further developed by Bell Labs during the 1960s

Google radio phones, Mobile phones.
They were around about mid-80's, and the cell technology came from that. I think that it was Bell labs that perfected the technology, but not sure.
