Blood in stool is not as dangerous as it sounds. My daughter started to develop bloody stools when she was around 2 weeks old. They first thought it was coming from tears in her rectum, then they sent out a stool sample to see if it was any type of bacterial infection (which could be cleared up with antibiotics), then they decided that is was a milk protein allergy and switched her formula to Nutramigen. After it was still showing positive for blood, even though we couldn't see it at this point, they switched her to Neocate, which is about the most hypoallerginic stuff made. She had a stool tested on this and it finally came out negetive. We had an appointment at Arkansas Children's Hospital for a GI Specialist just in case, but we get to cancel it!! My doctor told me that almost ALL cases of blood in stool are from a food or milk allergy and the ONLY time to go to the ER is if the blood is almost black in color and a jelly like constistancy. I would save a stool sample if is a good one and keep calling for an appointment. Your baby will be just fine. My daughter is 4.5 months old and we are just now not looking at her poo with a magnifying glass! LOL

I am not sure if the blood is on the outside of the stools or the inside. But, when my 2 1/2 year old was about 3 months old we noticed he was having to strain very hard to have a bowel movement. One night when he finally went there was blood. I called the doctor and he advised me to disect the stool and see if there was any blood inside it. Lucky for us there wasn't. He had strained so hard that he had torn himself. This went on until he was about a year old. However, if the blood is actually in the stool then this is serious and I would have your baby seen right away.
Good Luck!! I hope everything is okay w/ your little one!

What's his diet like? Has he started solid foods? Is he on a milk-based formula? I'm thinking (but not sure) maybe babies can get IBS like adults... I wouldn't doubt it, especially if he's started on solid foods or switched to a different formula. But I wouldn't take "the tests are clear" as an answer. Call around and find a pediatrician that will see him ASAP! And do as above said and save the next diaper with a bloody stool in a bag and refrigerate it and take it to the next appointment. I would definitely try to get a second and maybe third opinion on it if I were you.

Next time you see some, slap them in a baggie, put that inside a paper bag, and put it in the fridge. Call your pediatrican and tell them you've got a fresh sample, and that you're concerned about your child's health. Ask how they can arrange to get a test on those.
If that doesn't work, get another sample, and it is time to head out for a second opinion. Urgent care or the ER are other options. Stay persistent until someone addresses the problem.
Good luck.

How much blood and what color? How long has it been like this? Are you sure it is blood??
Typically, small amount of red indicates the bleeding is at or near rectum. More serious kind that happens further up in the system will appear black or dark tar like consistency. Or is he running a diarrhea and whole thing is liquid red? (this could be serious)
With that said, 4 month old does not have that much tolerance. If it were my child, I would take him to ER or urgent care facility.

Yeah. Contact the hospital immediately. Bloody stool is very serious. Do not wait on them to call you; you call them.

Your child probably has rectal bleeding. If you take him to a doctor, they will probably try to reverse that.
