I'm 17 and I've never had a part time job. (except for babysitting my cousins & other family friends)

I'm very lucky to have parents who support me. But there are some things they are not willing to pay for completely, for example a laptop (they said I need to make a contribution). Which I think is fair.

But what I think is not fair is that expect me to make a contribution yet they will not let me get a part time job.

I'm in my last year of high school and my school prinicipal said he believes I am a very capable student and that I will be dux of the school this year (top achiever). I would really love to achieve this, more than anything. He also told my parents that if i'm serious about this then I should not get a part time job as it'll take time away from my studies.

Do you think I should work hard possibly get dux ($5000 NZD scholarship) or beg my parents to let me get a job?

By the way I'm not one of those spoiled brats who is afraid of hard work or getting my hands dirty.

Carrie T- I have 8months until school is finished for the year. I'm well aware that a laptop is not required for school, believe me. Although it is not a requirment my Principal has told my parents it will help me a long way.

Although a laptop is DEFINITLY required at University. I will be living in a hostel away from home where computers are not provided. Every student I know at University either has a laptop or a desktop. You really can't get by without it.

In my opinion, stick it out, You seem to have wonderful parents who are providing for your basic needs and then some, just not the full Monty, trust me that's great, a lot of other young adults don't have that at home, take this time to focus and finish up with a great exit. It will Provide a great start when you get into college, and trust me don't worry about working and making money, you will have an entire life to do that, and all your success now in school is just more icing on the cake later in life!!!!!! Good Luck.

Well a scholarship would be amazing, and I can see your parents point of view they just wont the best for you and don't wont to see all your hard work go to waist. How ever you are 17 and that is old enough to make some of your own decisions, may be you can sit down with your parents and make a compromise, see if they will be will to let you work on weekends and maybe one day a week until 10 00 pm at the latest if your grades go down then you will give up your job. Tell the why you wont a job, what this will mean to you and do for you, also sagest that you can work full time during the summer. I had a part time job since I was in grad nine I graduated with honors from high school and went on to collage to become a nurse, you can do both especially if you are determined and hard working like you seem to be. You have a good head on your shoulders keep it up and remember school should come first, but it is a good experience to get a part time job too you can do both good luck to you.

Generally speaking, working has a negative impact on a high school student's education. It takes time away from their studies, and makes them tired, impacting their performance, when they do get to their studies. Parents, often are also concerned with the social atmosphere of the workplace. It may very well, be detrimental to the child.

However, there are jobs that offer more than a paycheck. If a job offers a paycheck, contributes towards your education, doesn't negatively impact your education, and the work environment is respectable, you may be able to convince your parents to allow you to work.

I know you plan to go into the medical field. Can you find work in a medical office on Saturdays? Are there any tutoring assignments available through your high school? Are there any law offices that require clerical assistance?

The type of workplaces many parents, like myself, would rather not have their children work in, are environments that have a core of youthful workers, e.g., food service, supermarkets.

I understand that you want the job, but the value of the scholarship exceeds the amount of money that you would make and would be expected to contribute to purchase the lap top.

Talk to your parents and see if you can get them to agree to allow you to work this summer instead of now. That way you can concentrate on your studies and win the scholarship.

You wont really need the lap top until you leave for school and you would have a couple of months to earn that money. Also, you don't really need a lap top for college. It is just a convience - but it is ok that you want one. Just wait until the summer to go to work because the scholarship is way more important. It will look great on your college application and on your resume after college when you are looking for jobs!

Hope this helps!

Point out to your parents how responsible you are and that you are more than willing to contribute but that you will need a job to do so. Try to find something that wouldn't have too many hours so it won't interfere with your school and approach them about that job specifically, it may be easier to convince them if they have solid details. Good luck. I think it would be better if there were more people with your attitude

how about asking your parents to let you do house cleaning and Aron's for the elderly .. you can put a add in the paper or do yard work in the neighborhood.. they may be worried about tax purposes.. and really a part time job will take away from school work and could lower grade but the one i have mention wont effect their taxes cause it is like baby sitting ..paid under the table.. you could also ask them if they have extra chores for you do so you could get that lab top

Don't worry, a lot of parents will not allow their teens to get jobs because they are afraid it will take away from their studies. I would say try to go for that scholarship, but if you think you have it in the bag, go ahead and beg for a part time job.
