First of all, much of this new "information" is garbage and doesn't really deserve to be called information at all. Second, having the choice to access all of this information is not the same as actually choosing to access it. Most people simply look to reinforce what they already believe. Also, what incentive is there to really learn something when you can just look it up.

People aren't smarter now, they just think they are.

Access to an abundance of info does not mean people will make the effort to access it. That requires WORK. I also think in some cases, school has changed from an educational institution to a babysitting institution. Students in general don't respect authority like they used to and therefore don't learn as much because they're too busy causing trouble and distraction. Therefore less knowledge gets absorbed.

Because along with the age of unprecedented access to info came along a higher expectation of what people should know, and various luxuries that caused laziness. Technically people are smarter than ever before, but considering the fact that the amount of information has grown exponentially, people are unable to keep up.

Because of this unprecendented access to info, human beings don't have to go out there and figure it out themselves anymore. In the old days, while figuring out something, people would pick up other info on the way. Now they can just type something in and the exact answer appears on the screen. We've become extremely lazy. People also don't feel a need to go out and try new things when they have a TV and a computer in their home.

They could have a case of the lazies... or just simply don't know how to access the data. For instance, how many questions have you seen here that could easily and completely answered by one or two words in Google?
Its a matter of how hard they want to work for the information.

People would rather repeat the 15 second new blurbs they hear than actually look for the truth on their own. They are too busy listening to Rap, playing video games and watching TV.

This is a good question and I hope people are paying attention.
The answer is, because people are now basically lazy and selfish, and overentertained. Lack of education and culture extends from all of those things.
God bless America.

Because people are lazy. A lot of people like to be told what to do. We can find out just about anything we want on just about any topic. People are just too lazy to find out.

Very good point!

Any reasonable person can research any subject and come up with an enormous amount of data. After that you just go with your "gut feeling" to help you decide what is fact and what is fiction.

Because they're too dumb to appreciate that fact?
