My tank is only a small one, Its like a portible tank **My paqrtner parents brought it for me just a little one to learn, as they all have tanks and I was quiet excitted to learn about them ect ect.** And I have brought those breeder nets/containers but they wont fit in my tank as the lid is a bit to small and I cant hang them. So i went out and brought one with suckers so it sticks to the glass.. And to my luck last night I found 3 little fry's swimming around, my partner caught them and stuck them in the breeder for me. *we had no knowledge that they were pregnate .. * But early this morning when I woke up they all had seem to exscape from the breeder as it has very tiny breether holes and the other fish had ate them :(. Is there any advise that anyone could give me? Is it alright to get sticky tape or something to cover those little holes? I had bigger holes on the botton of the breeder box thingy so I but the filter stuff on it and stuck marbels on top. please help anyone.

Sticky tape probably has some kind of chemicals in it that will harm your fish, I would seal up the holes, if you feel you must, with aquarium sealant, it has hundreds of uses other than fixing leaky tanks. You can get a small tube of it at the fish store for about $4-5. Or.... you can go to Home Depot and get a huge tube of 100% silicone clear sealant for less than $5. Make sure it is clear sealant and has NO mold or fungus inhibitors in it. I use GE 100% Clear Silicone Rubber Sealant. In fact, I just put a broken decoration back together with it today.

However, if you seal up those small holes, you won't get any water circulation in the breeding trap and will have to do some water changes on the trap in addition to your regular partial changes on the tank itself.

If you think you are going to continue with keeping fish, I reccommend that you go out and buy yourself a 10 gallon tank kit for about $30 at the local fish store or wal mart. It will have everything you need to keep fish and be big enough for a breeding net. Use the water and gravel (without washing it) to start up your new tank. That way you don't lose your beneficial bacteria that have built up in the other tank.

To use a breeding net, which I reccommend, get some bushy floating plants and put in with the expectant mother. The fry will hide in the plants and you will experience the joy of new life.

I had a fish once that was pregnant. We bought it from the store like that and didnt even know it. I know you can buy breeders without holes in them but if you don't want to get another one you could fill in the holes with aquarium sealer but that is smelly and messy. tape when wet will most likely just fall off and become a hazard for the other fish. what we wound up doing was just removing them entirely from the tank and putting them in their own small container. I have seen nice filtered systems that are smaller than a gallon.

I saw "8" didn't respond - my guess is that you have some sort of livebearers? Another option for you is to use plants for hiding places for your fry. The plants can be live ones, or if you don't want to have to deal with care or lighting at this point, get silk or plastic ones. As long as there are enough to create a "barrier" that adults can't easily swim through and the adults are adequately fed, at least some of the fry will survive.
