The distance between the earth and the Sun is about 93 million miles. To reduce the difficulties of dealing with the large numbers of these distances scientists have deisignated the distance from the earth to the Sun as one___________, or AU.

That's called an Astronomical Unit. Obviously equal to the distance between the Earth and sun, about 93 million miles. This makes it easier for commoners to perceive the distance between two things in space, where distances are so great that 900000000000 miles means nothing to most people
