The last time I tried to find the answer to this question, I found that scientists are still researching it. Yawning is contagious, but why we yawn is still kind of sketchy.

A yawn (synonyms chasma, oscitation from the Latin verb oscitare, to open the mouth wide) is a reflex of deep inhalation and exhalation associated with being tired, with a need to sleep, or from lack of stimulation.
Pandiculation is the term for the act of stretching and yawning.

-Yawning is a powerful non-verbal message with several possible meanings, depending on the circumstances.
-It is also claimed to help increase the state of alertness of a person.
-It could possibly be from lack of oxygen. The exact causes of yawning are still unknown.

Because we lack oxygen and by yawning we take in more oxygen. It can also be an evolutionary remain because of our ancestors use to copy the actions of others in order to survive. So when we see people yawn, we have an urge to yawn.

As our body starts to prepare for sleep our breathing starts going into sleep mode but because we're still awake we need more oxygen than if we are asleep - the yawn drags in a quick shot of air.

In the morning we're waking up and getting moving before our body has adjusted from sleep mode, so we yawn then too.

Yawning because someone else does is because we're basically a "herd" animal - same as we may also laugh and cry together. Monkey see - monkey do :o)

When You get tired you take in less air so every once in a while you need a yawn to get in a lot of air.

There isn't a proven reason why we yawn.
The accepted idea is that the oxygen level is low in our lungs, or that we are bored.

But then I ask why do we yawn when someone else does
