find the base when the amount and percent are known.

amount / percent = base

convert 2 % to decimal

remove the % symbol. divide 2 by 100

2 / 100 = 0.02

Divide 5 by the decimal

5 / 0.02 = 250

The base is 250

5 is 2 % of 250

Write it as a proportion with the percent number over 100 = the part over the total (the total is the number after the word "of")

2/100 = 5/n

cross multiply: 2n = 500

divide by 2: n = 250

Do this:
0.02 x N = 5 or 1/50 x N = 5
(1/50)(50/1) x N = (5)(50/1)
N = 250
you times 1/50 by its reciprocal and you get 1. Then you times
5 by 50/1 and get 250.

The main number is always 100%
Do you know the main number? No... so that is going to be your unknown.

x --> 100%
---- = -----
5 --> 2%

Cross multiply:

2x = 100*5

2x = 500

x = 500/2

x = 250

The number that you are looking for is 250!

I remember I learned this little "reminder" in middle school.
is/of = x/100
5 takes the "is" and the unknown number takes the "of".
By setting up this proportion, cross multiply and solve for x.

5/x = 2/100
500 = 2x
x = 250
There's your answer. ^__^
