What are the lights called by the dashboard?

It depends on what you are referring to. If you are referring to the different coloured lights that illuminate when you start your vehicle, they are called, WARNING INDICATORS. If you are referring to the lights that light up the instrument cluster at night when you turn on your headlights, they are called the INSTRUMENT CLUSTER ILLUMINATION LIGHTS. Hope this helps.

There are two kinds of lights in the dashboard...the first are "illumination" lights, as others said, and are there simply to let you see the gages when it is darker like at night.

The others, the red or amber ones, are actually "warning lights"...those are there to let you know that something is wrong, either with the engine, or other areas around the car. When you first start your car, all warning lights are supposed to come on for about four or so seconds, as a "self test", so you can make sure the bulbs haven't burned out.

It is a good idea to familiarize yourself with exactly which ones they are, so that if one doesn't come on some day, you know you need to get the bulb changed. Also, if one turns on and doesn't go off, you need to check out the cause...
