Because it's abnormal to be a killer, and it's even crazier to be a parent who doesn't spoil their child.
edit...
...they're probably staring at you like that 'cause you're a 19 year old telling a 5 year old she can't have everything she wants... It's not that they think you're a bad parent for not spoiling her, it's that they realize with that statement, the child is your kid!

i have been in an analogous situation. i'm a guy, and hasn't ever been raped; yet my mom has tried come as a lot as me with a knife in my sleep at the same time as i became a baby. I grew up with a similar mom, and pa whom of that were also no help. They always instructed me how stupid i became, and everybody in school made relaxing of me starting to be up as a baby. I flunked of out of highschool, yet i became fortunate sufficient to have my grandfather save my existence. Now i bypass to a wise college, i'm able to allure to acquaintances, and women. i comprehend you're searching for help on right here because you've an fairly small spectacle of wish. wish that sometime, you gained't experience this way; and that you're going to stay to inform the tale and be at liberty like something of the international you word. nicely enable me inform you, that's a threat. i presumed-about killing myself each day up until eventually many years in the past, even before at the same time as i became 13. Now i'm 21, and existence is giant. i'm satisfied i took the alternative to stay alive and undergo the discomfort and develop into what i'm now. i'm able to't wait to work out how much better functional existence will be than now in the destiny, although issues are transforming into somewhat better functional already. wish this facilitates.

It is not good to give your child every little thing she wants. When my daughter starts acting up at the mall or wherever, I take her home. Of course I get her treats some times, but if I gave her everything she ever wanted shed be spoiled and miserable. Maybe the people giving you dirty looks don't have kids.

Who exactly is looking at you like that? Overindulgent grandparents? Jealous siblings or friends?
Take comfort in the fact that you're being not only reasonable but also wise in teaching your daughter not to expect everyone to ask how high (if and) when she says jump! Children have the "right" to be wanted (loved), cherished, protected, cared for and educated. That is not the same as being given "stuff" simply because she wants it.

Because a screaming child is unpleasant. They don't care why they're screaming, they just know they don't like it.
But I know how you feel! Its not like you're beating them, you're just not spoiling them.
I was sitting at the drive through at Wendy's yesterday and in the SUV in front of me, this kid was throwing papers and trash out the back window and mom was just sitting there chatting away on her cell phone. At one point I even saw her look back at the mess. Did she say anything or get out to pick it up? No.
Kudos to you for not giving in to your kid's every whim!

i'm with you, giving in to every child's whim is one of the worse things a parent can do. humans have a natural hierarchy when it comes to family. role reversal is not natural, so accept the bad person role as seen by other adults because they are afraid of peer pressure. you owe your child guidence by setting limits. the world is not fair and the sooner the lesson learned the better

Because they're idiots who don't know how to raise a well disciplined child. Console yourself in the knowledge that they have screaming spoiled brats and you have a nice, well behaved child who can accept her lot.
But give her some things she wants ok? ;)

It's the truth. You can't give a child everything they want, even if you have the money to, if you want respectful and appreciative kids. They probably either don't have kids themselves, or have really rotten ones. :)
