there are a lot of possibilities first check for spark or lack thereof which is most likely possible causes are camshaft position sensor, crankshaft position sensor, ignition module or a combination of all. if it was fuel related i don't think it would start at all. you do not need a new engine unless it makes awful knocking noiseswhile running or has other problems but not what you are describing . any diagnostic shop should be able to tell you which of the sensors are causing the start stall condition probably around 100 bucks for diag plus repair. good luck

Usually when the fuel pump goes out or the fuel filter is bad, you wouldn't be able to start it. Could be a vacuum leak (air leaking from your intake). Definitely go to Autozone*, if you have one around where you live or any parts store that tests your alternator and battery for free*.
If you can get someone to give you a jump and the engine still doesn't stay on for more than a few seconds, I would say it's a vacuum leak.

as you can see from the numerous options below it could be anything or a combination of many things. Its a 9 year old car there could be several thing wrong with your car. Anything for valves needing repair to batteries needing replacing. i suggest you get your car in to a shop and let them do a full diagnostic and give you the results, in my opinion that would be the safest thing.

i'm fantastically beneficial that a ninety 9 sentra has a timing belt, no longer chain. If it breaks, your vehicle won't do something. i'd get a 2d opinion. Do you have any ability? i.e. guages, radio, lighting fixtures furniture, etc? if so this is unquestionably no longer your battery or alternator(except they're very dim). Does the engine turn over once you crank it?

Maybe a clogged fuel filter, maybe restricted exhaust, maybe bad ICM, could be alot of things. Have it towed to a shop for diagnosis. It is really hard to diagnosis without knowing some things like fuel pressure, data from the PCM, etc. Good luck.

A triggered alarm system will cut off the engine after a few seconds.

If your car starts and dies withen a few seconds, most likely cause is the security system.VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH GM CARS.If this is your symptom, then common failures are the ignition lock cylinder or if you have more than one key for your car try a different key.

EGR valve could be dirty. When was the last time it was tuned up? Could also be the fuel filter or fuel pump.

Could be the alternator. Is the battery low? Could be your idle is set too low, too. Is it fuel injected or does it have a carburator?
