The empire under a single authority that was greatest area in history was the Mongol Empire from the years c 1268- c 1330 corrosponding with the reign of the Khagan- Khublai Khan. Although his cousins ruled territories in the empire they all acceded to his ultimate authority of the great Khan. This situation existed from Ghenghis Khan until Khublai died. After that the empire started to break up. At it's peak it stretched from the pacific ocean to Hungary and Eastern Europe and from the Arctic circle to India , the Persian Gulf and South East Asia.

The largest conglomerate of like powers was the communistic powers of Russia, China, Eastern Europe, Laos, Vietnam and North Korea. But these were under a multitude of powers, some of which actually fought each seperate from a central authority. But for a single power under a single authority- it was the Mongol Empire.

In the ancient world the web site reconds that the Persian Empire was the biggest but looking at the maps with the Alexandrian Empire and the Roman Empire-I doubt it because Alexander conquered the Persian Empire and more and also as far as the Roman Empire if you look at the map you will see it is bigger still-especially(and this they don't take into account) the gains of Trajian in the years 117-118 A.D. Nevertherless-the number one spot as far as area is must be awarded(as part of a single power and not semantics) to the Mongol Empire. Hope this helps.

Here's an Expert from wiki on the british empire i've isolated the sentence ure looking for. The British Empire comprised the dominions, colonies, protectorates, mandates, and other territories ruled or administered by the United Kingdom (UK), that had originated with the overseas colonies and trading posts established by England in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. At its height it was the largest empire in history , for over a century, was the foremost global power. By 1922, the British Empire held sway over a population of about 458 million people, one-quarter of the world's population and covered more than 13,000,000 square miles (33,670,000 km²): approximately a quarter of Earth's total land area.[2] As a result, its political, linguistic and cultural legacy is widespread. At the peak of its power, it was often said that "the sun never sets on the British Empire" because its span across the globe ensured that the sun was always shining on at least one of its numerous territories.

The Mongolians had the largest empire in world history. Timijun (Gehngis) Khan's empire stretched from China and reached the European Steppes. Timijun's sons further expanded the empire into the Middle East, Africa, and controlled the Indian subcontinent under the Mogul Empire. Thus, as stated above in terms of landmass and distance the Mongolians had the largest empire in history.
