we called dcfs and they seem to be brushing off the report of giving a 7-year old a knife and a BB Gun (unattended). the child stated that it happened and so did the mother who gave them to him (told dcfs). the report came back "unfounded". we called the next step up and they said there are no laws about giving a child a weapon unless they hurt themselves or someone else. does anyone know anything about that?

I dont know about the laws but we can call that flat out stupidity. Not to mention extremely bad parenting. What is that mother trying to convey to her son? That its ok to kill things or people? She will be the first one to wonder why her son is in jail for murder as well. Gee, I wonder why. That mother needs to have her kids taken away and put into foster care while she gets some hard lessons in proper parenting.

We had a similar experience last year with our daughter, only it was a pair of scissors, but the same intent. Check the school's policy against violence. Most schools have a zero tolerance policy and since the incident occured on the bus, it's still considered school property. I would pursue the incident with the principle and school board insisting the child be expelled, or at the very least suspended, and get some couseling. It sounds like he needs it. You may also want to have your daughter talk to the school couselor as well. Being bullied in such a violent manner can have lasting effects. I completely understand your and your husband's anger, but staying calm and insistent is your best strategy. Most schools will ask that you not tell other parents to prevent panic or worse, other parents insisting thier children need to "protect" themselves by bringing harmful objects to school. You may also want to check with the Sheriff's Office to see if you can get a restraining order against the child which would force the school to take more severe action. The child may be too young to be charged with a crime, but your daughter should not be subjected to the possibility of bodily harm no matter what the age of the agressor. Good luck!

well.. depending on the childs understanding of the knife and gun... i wouldnt give a 7 year old a knife.. but i had a real gun (not unattended) when i was 7... now... i had a BB Gun unattended when i was about that age and my cousin did too and we've never had any major injuries.... a few bruises maybe.. but thats it.

again.. it totally depends on the child's maturity with them... i mean.. as long as he doesnt shoot anyone else.. its kewl.. and i see no reason to call DFCS.
