Do the homework that is assigned and do some more challenging problems that are most likely going to appear on tests and exams. Think like a math teacher, think about what questions he or she might love to test you about.

Mathematics is easy when you understand the underlaying concepts. It is hard when you try to learn procedure after procedure.

The textbooks in the US such as Saxon are awful in this respect. Truly awful.

What worked for me was to get a bunch of other text books (at least 3) with more explanation and less drill. Read the topics you're doing from all of them. The different explanations may gell and get the point across. When you have got the point, practice the exercises until you've got it down.

That got me through school and university. YMMV.

I don't know what grade you're in, but assuming that you're doing trig, check the trig section in math books. Does it start with soh cah toa, or a picture of a circle with triangles in them? Avoid the former, buy the latter.

Once you are on top of your game (which might take a few weeks of say 1 hour a night) your grade will be up and future math learning will seem easier. Your friends will be jealous. For some it's easy, for the rest of us, there has to come a point where you take the plunge, pull your finger out and invest some real time and effort. The difference it makes in your life could be huge.

1. Ask your teacher if you can come in after school to talk with him/her about your math grade.
2. When you go in for the talk, tell your teacher that you are really interested in doing better in math (not that you want a higher grade).
3. If you are confused about some of the topics, ask for help on those specific topics. You'll be surprised how much you can learn in a short time if you have someone help you.
4. Ask if you can do some of the homeworks over again to try to understand better. If you are allowed to do that and you follow through and do the work, then you might ask if you could try to take a test over. Teachers can tell if you mean it or if you are just trying to talk them into a better grade.
5. Pay attention in class, work the examples in your notebook right along with the teacher. What the teacher writes on the board ... you write in your notebook. Ask questions about things you don't get.
6. Good luck.

It helps if you find enjoyment and purpose in the subject. Maths can be very powerful indeed. Do your homework and understanding it. As you continue through school it will build on top of what you previously learnt to become a powerful language that can predict and manage many things.

Learn to like it. Try and appreciate the satisfaction you get when you answer a difficult problem. Also, do puzzles to get yourself into the logical thinking mindset - they needn't be maths ones - because it makes it easier and everything's more fun when its easier for you.

Seriously, I was on a B, possibly A if I tried really, really hard before I started enjoying maths. When I started to like it, I was A*.
