They're for both of you.
The purpose is both to help make sure you're getting enough vitamins to stay healthy yourself and to make sure that your baby develops properly.
One of the most important ones is folic acid, which helps protect your baby from birth defects, such as neural tube defects, which can cause spine and skull deformation.
Another one is calcium, which is, of course, for bones.
You will want to make sure not to take too much Vitamin A, however.
It's best to discuss this with your doctor, who will help you choose one that will work with you.
Also, remember that just taking a vitamin supplement isn't enough. You have to make sure you're also eating enough healthy food to keep you both healthy. The supplement is just an extra precaution.
The most important part is your diet. That's where most of the nutrients are coming from.

Help both you and the baby. For instance, folate helps the baby to prevent spinal cord defects. Calcium helps you regain calcium lost to building your baby's bones. Many women suffer from mild anemia, which can affect both of you, so the extra iron helps prevent this problem.
If you have a really good diet already, high in fruits and vegetables and dairy and very low in processed or fast food, you could get buy with just regular vitamins. For instance, if you have high iron content in your blood, the prenatal iron levels may be too high. If you are over 165 lbs. you need to take much higher levels of folate.
While I am not a fan of Dr. Spock, the web site does provide good explanation and considerations.

Prenatal vitamins are for you AND the baby. The baby especially needs the folic acid to prevent neural tube defects like anencephaly and spina bifida. Babies with anencephaly do not develop a brain and are stillborn or die shortly after birth. Those with spina bifida have a defect of the spinal column that can result in varying degrees of handicap and about 30 percent have slight to severe mental retardation.
So now that you're going to be sure you never miss even one of your prenatal vitamins, you'll need to take them with a full meal and a glass of milk. Vitamins need some fat to be properly absorbed, so please take them with food. A lot of women claim they can't take vitamins, but they take them on an empty stomach which is contraindicated.
I really love the Target brand of prentals, they are awesome. Best of luck to you and baby, hon. You're going to have so much fun!!

Prenatal vitamins help you get the additional vitamins that your body needs to grow a healthy little life. The vitamins first help your body and then your baby. My OB told me that I could take "Flintstones" chewables if the prenatal made me ill as long as I got enough folic acid (which help with baby's brain receptors or something like that).
If you are really in doubt, ask your doctor, they are your best ally in having a healty child.

both. the baby will take alot of your vitamins if you dont get enough, it can cause you to be weak or for your teeth to rot. Also it gives the baby the nutrients that it needs to grow and develop healthy.

Vitamens help you both. Your body is busy supplying your baby with all the needed nutrients the developing fetus needs to grow. If you do not get good nutrition your body will actually take what ever it needs from your stored levels. So take them, eat well and take good care of yourself

Nope! you could take them once you desire, in spite of the undeniable fact that it would not make you greater fertile. that's in simple terms supplementations that are meant to replace those you lose once you're pregnant, so do no longer see how which could make you greater fertile. Get an ovulation detector from you pharmacy and circulate from there. whilst you at the instant are not getting pregnant, that's by fact which you at the instant are not ovulating. pills won't exchange that except it honestly fertilization drugs. If that have been the case, we does no longer want those form of fertilization clinics. medical doctors could in simple terms be prescribing prenatals.

they help both of you-
they'll give you more energy and the nutrients you need because the baby will take nutrients from your body any where it can get them-- like your hair or your teeth which is why your hair can fall out, your teeth get weak, etc. if you don't have those nutrients your baby needs.
BUT, consult your dr. first, because everyone is different

I think they help both of you. They support your body with nutrients it would need anyway, just a little extra so you and the baby get the nutrition you need.
