I have sunk about 2 grand in my Metro now and ppl continuously keep on ripping me off. First the pulley bolt broke on the bottom and I have been having problems ever since. Every time I put my a/c on the car loses power and rides very slow just to get back up to 45mph and the service engine light has been on. I've taken it to several repair shops and they keep on saying it is computer code 400 and it is not the EGR. They said(Chev. Dealer} that my crankshaft gaskets needed to be replaced and that the part that the timing belt sits on was corroded so they replaced the gaskets and cleaned this part and they charged me 600.00 I am very up-set. It doesn't need an O2 sensor nor fuel pump so I don't know what else to do. Everywhere I'm taking it has cost me $600 and the minute I leave the car runs fine 30minutes later the service engine light comes back on. I don't know what to do.

First.... engine code # P0400 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Malfunction......

I would scan the computer again and double check the codes. This is either the EGR valve or the PCV valve..... I would change the pcv valve and change the EGR..... is your EGR brand new? If it isnt than change it.

Because this car, from the sounds of it has suffered from some deferred maintenance and a car like a Metro will not be long for this world if this is the case.
The Chevy dealer is the last place that I would take this car to begin with unless it's within warranty. They are expensive and changing those seals was a labor intensive repair. Oil leaks aren't good for timing belts either. As for rest of the stuff, you need to find a good independent garage. There is no code 400 on that car either; but there is a 401 through 406 and they do deal with the EGR system, so someones got their wires crossed. This car is probably due for retirement in any case. You've already spent more on it than what it worth. I've been there too, so don't feel bad.

ok Miss Noclue, my dear friend,
the A/C don't have anything to do with it. It is still running bad even when the a/c is off. However I do believe I will have the PVC valve changed. I can not believe the car is at a chevy dealer and still can not find the problem $2600.00 later. But oh boy they are trying to get me into a new car. No thanks its had paid for itself 3 times over and I do get great gas mileage, that is when it is running right. I know it is not a high end car but it is the only car I fit in and can see over the dash. Please no clue keep in mind I am only 5 feet tall and 92lbs. I can't see over most dashes. And even in the car I have to sit on 2 pillows. PS. Would a real mechanic please email me and give me some advise on what the problem could be, by the way this problem did not start until I put a new used moter in it. it is a 98 car but the motor that was put in it is a 99 motor please help by email...

The drastic power loss is caused by the Drag of the AC compressor..But, there should be a cut off switch for the ac compressor during acceleration or passing....You might have someone check that...These engines are so under powered that they need that compressor to kick off at the right times...

As far as the check engine light...It could be coming on for a thousand different reason...Depending on Miles, it could be a emissons problem...

Just be careful on who you take it too...Just because they are a chevy dealer, doesnt mean they actually want to work on a Geo...Ha ha...I am a chevrolet tech, and I Will say that I hate those cars....The parts are too high, and it is hard to explain that to the customer....They say the car isnt worth that...And I suppose it isnt......

You arent really saving that much in gas...Pehaps you should step it up to a Cavalier or Cobalt...Both are fine automobiles for the buck...Plus, you will save more in parts and repair...Probably enough to pay for themselves...

The newer cars do not have a speedometer cable anymore, under the van on the left side (drivers side) just under the door there is your transmission, there is a speed sensor on the left side of the transmission, that controls your speedometer and your odometer, try unplugging it, checking the contacts, and re plug it back in... if that doesnt work, chances are you need a new speed sensor (V.S.S vehicle speed sensor) not a wheel speed sensor, it gets confusing and you might ask for the wrong part.

Replace front oil pump gasket. Should fix problem. You might also look at the left bottom corner of the head for oil leaking. Both are very common problems with geo's.

Your $2000 is gone. It's not coming back. Whoever told you that you could put an AC compressor on that lawnmower engine was an idiot. Dump the car. Don't spend another dime on it. We've all made big money mistakes. Doesn't mean you have to keep making them.

its got a 1.0 l engine, of course its slow when you crank up the A/C, do you have any idea how much HP is used to run that A/C pump? theres barely any left to haul its own *** around.
