i have a 2002 pete 387 with a cummins ISX with a autoshift transmission. every once in a while my check engine light would come on, i mostly notice it going down hill, with a somewhat higher speed (1600-1700 rpm), or after sitting idling for a half of an hour or so. the light would come on, stay on for a few seconds and then go back off. i also noticed that every now and then the engine would run rough for a few seconds, the light would come on but again would go out after only a few seconds.
had it in the shop last week, they checked for fault codes, found a low fuel pressure code, changed the fuel filter. but apperently that didn't do the trick.
advice would be greatly appreciated.

its an oil pressure issue. the deal is that when you go down hill all the oil goes to the front and at that rpm it is all getting pumped to the top so you are at low voluime in the pan and crank case. try adding a half gallon to a gallon and i bet that light will stay off. when ever the oil sensor is tripped it immediatly prepares to shut the fuel relay off to avoid accidental damage. also get rid of that engine and get a cummins big cam 400. a bullet proof engine with no bs performance day after day.

There's a little valve that returns fuel from the rail to the tank. It's just a bit worn out and lets too much fuel go back, lowering the fuel pressure when you're off the throttle.

i don't know whether You have a electric transfer pump(if that is. is about to give up.)

sound very extrange to me.....

should have more than one inactive faulty code .
find someone with Cummins INSITE software ,and retrieve all the inactive codes,to see for real. what going on?

my reasons?down the hill code is one.running rough is another.once in while, lite on, is another one.

once in while is the level of coolant to low.
rough idle when hot is E.G.R.
down the hill code is,tranny and engine speed sensor mismatch .
all those codes SHOULD be stored as inactive in the computer memory.
