Some people say it is, but I don't think it always is. My mom had them big time and I don't have any even with my second. I think women have more of a CHANCE of having them if the moms did, but every womans body is shaped different, and it also depends on how much weight you gain and how big the baby is. Someone who gains 80lbs is going to get them regardless of whether her mom did or not. (And as for the answer that said "go to babycenter.com", I did and they also said that it's only possibly hereditary and that no one knows for sure.)

It is hereditary. Look it up on www.babycenter.com or read any pregnancy book.

BTW: Stretch marks are caused by lack of enough elastin in the skin. It has nothing to do with body type, albiet bigger women are more likely to get stretch marks. It is hereditary on BOTH sides of the family and can affect some women in the family and not others.

Yes, genetics makes you predisposed to stretch marks but there are other factors. If you have taken care of your skin through a healthy diet and exercise, you are less likely to get stretch marks because your skin is more elastic. If you want to minimize stretch marks, eat food that is good for your skin, drink lots of water, and hope that you gain weight gradually instead of all at once. Try the creams, but I've never heard of one that worked for everyone, but it is worth a shot. Good luck!

My doctor said it's genetics, and it can come from either side of the family. My mom and I both didn't get strecth marks.

no i don't think so, my mother had 4 children, some very big, and she didn't have one single mark. I had two children and me and her are same body structure, and i have alot of wrinkles on my belly that i'm sure will never fully go away

I do not think it is hereditary. I have a friend wose mom had bad bad stretchmarks and she didn't have one. My mom didn't have any and I got them. I think every person is different.

It also depends on how much weight you gain.

THAT IS WHAT THEY SAY. IT CAN COME FROM EITHER SIDE THOUGH, THE MEN AS WELL AS WOMEN. SO EVEN THOUGH THE WOMEN IN YOUR FRIENDS FAMILY DIDN'T GET THEM, DOESN'T MEAN YOUR FRIENDS MEN IN HER FAMILY ARE IMMUNE TO THEM.
SO IF SHE DIDN'T GET THEM THEN SHE IS LUCKY.
