Doctors (& you) can listen to the heartbeat at around 12 weeks.
But at 8 weeks the heart has all 4 chambers & beats at around 180 times per minute, according to pregnancy books. Although, my baby's usually was between 165-175 beats/min throughout the pregnancy - a healthy boy.

believe it or not it is a scientific fact that the baby's heart starts beating about 3 weeks after conception. This is before any woman usually knows she is pregnant. I know some people think it is later, but it is not. How far along are you, if you are pregnant?
It shows up on the ultrasound a bit later- maybe 6-10 weeks- but that does not mean it is not beating.

A baby's heart begins to develop at conception, but is completely formed by eight weeks into the pregnancy.
It starts beating halfway into this process.
