it depends. i've seen and loved both. and i cry at the end of each.
i love movies about the vietnam war, but i'm not sure i can relate to it as much as midnight cowboy. not to say I am a hooker trying to make it in the big city, but i am a loserish type person who is trying to get up there in the world. I think the performances in both are awesome, but ratso really strikes a cord in me that the characters in deer hunter couldn't. its just so sweet and sad how two "scumy" people get together and make eachothers lives a little bit better.
sorry its long i'm a girl, bottom line, midnight cowboy is more depressing.

The Deer Hunter because it dealt with war veterans.

Midnight Cowboy. A story about two losers in the big city and one of them dies. Total depression.

Taxi Driver is more depressing than either of them. But of those two, Deer Hunter is more depressing.

Midnight Cowboy. The scene where the two of them are shivering in cold and all of the pathetic losers in the movie. Definitely depressing.
