Which should I go for? The walls are fairly smooth, although the finish isn't great up close & there are some cracks. Should I stick with smooth, or go for textured? I can't visualise the effect it would have. What are people's experiences of this stuff? It's half the coverage, so twice the cost!
Also, what's the stuff you pain the unrendered bricks 6" below the render with, is it bitcamen?

Go for textured paint as it will fill in the cracks and give a better effect to the walls. The paint contains like a fine sand so it will have a gritty look and disguise imperfections. We have just painted the bricks at the bottom with Wickes red brick and tile paint.

No not really a good idea as the sand tends to settle out in the bottom of the pain tin unless you keep it well stirred there are proprietary brands of filler paints on the market like polytex take a look at your local DIY store

I would go for the texture. Use a scrap piece of plaster board and try a few different methods...heavy texture to light..see how it looks, hold it up to the wall . We just used wall plaster compound and a sprayer ( rented at the hardware store) .It wasn't difficult to do. .I am not sure what the rest of your question entails sorry...hope this helps though.

You are best off going for textured as it will fill the fine cracks and it will cover an uneven surface well. The bottom 6" unrendered bricks i can not help you with. sorry.
