How long is a piece of string? It depends how well you want to be able to play; many people learn guitar for many years, picking up techniques from various parts of the world, improving their own skill, and practicing for hours a day.

Do you just want to be able to strum some chords? Or do you want to be able to play a particular piece, or to a particular level of ability?

Picking up your first three basic chords only takes a few hours of practice, and is enough to back some basic melodies. Learning fingered technique can take years to accomplish - it all depends what you want to achieve.

It depends on what you want to learn, your back ground and how much time you're willing to dedicate to it, and your personal ability.

Also, there are alot of different "types" of learning guitar. Are you talking bass guitar or lead? Do you want to play the notes (Tab) or learn the chords and strum?

Do you already read music and understand key signatures and theory or are you starting off from ground zero?

I'm learning classical guitar (one of the harder paths), but I know music theory, and I read music. I've been taking lessons 10 months. I have a really good grounding in the guitar now, and I'm getting there with the discipline of classical. I also practice every day for 30 minutes and take a lesson once a week.

If you take a more basic path (chords and strumming) for example, and dedicate time to practicing daily, you're probably going to take 6 months, minimum, and that's with lessons and assuming you pick things up fairly quick.

The Oracle makes a good point. You can never really learn guitar. There is just too much to know. To know all the basic chords, the fretboard, and some songs, about 3 - 6 months. To become a guitar god, it takes years and years of practice.

I learned my first song (so I could play withoout screwing up) in about 2 weeks.

It really depends on your gift for music in general and how much you put into the instrument. Some people have a natural gift for the guitar and they pick it up very quickly and can churn out complex whole songs in less than a year. Other can't keep a beat or hold a tune so they either give up, or practice a whole lot harder to get better. So you see it all depends.

Depending how keen you are to learn, and it should take atleast a day to learn the basic chords.Thats a start to playing the guitar. As for my husband, he would rather you learn the theory side first before you can even hold the guitar.Theory is the most important part to music, then once you crack that then you would start on the practical, which is learn your chords and how to strum the guitar.

Some people find it too painful on the fingers and give up quickly. It takes some time to strengthen findger msucles and toughen up some skin onthe fingertips. The first several months will be mostly noise and pain. Then it gets interesting if you hang in there. If you want to ply some chords to sing along on simple songs, then that should take a couple of months. If you want to rock and roll and play a few leads, think a couple of years. It really just depends on how much time and dedication you have.

You never fully learn. There are always new things to do. How long does it take to learn the basics? That depends on you. How dedicated are you? How much do you want to practice? Will you give up if it gets hard? How good is your ear? Thee is no set time. It takes as long as it takes.
