stuff is just a general word people use for things when they cant be bothered naming it all, like i could say i went to the supermarket and bought some stuff (referring to my shopping) or if someone asked me what i had been upto i could say the usual stuff (meaning my housework,walking the dogs e.t.c)

I personally think stuff is used in one of three ways
1. describe something that otherwise doesn't have a name
(to say that "I saw a man with 80 legs and a kangaroo face", you might say "Remember that stuff with 80 legs and kangaroo face?")
2. indicate a situation/physical thing regarding which people do not wish to elaborate upon.
(e.g. if your boss asked you about your weekend, instead of saying "I went to school, and then swimming, and then parent's anniversayr, and then club, and then the meeting you wanted me to go to."..... You might say "I took care of some personal stuff, and then went to the meeting you wanted me to attend.")
3. To avoid a conversation about something. (due to lack of knowledge, or lack of interest)
(e.g. Parents asking their child "where were you last night son? You didn't come home?" the kid would say "I was busy with some stuff. talk to you later!")

George Carlin said that other people's stuff is s**t, and your s**t is stuff. He had this whole bit about having all your stuff in your house and going to Hawaii with a small subset of your stuff.
