Or the same sex, if you're so inclined?

If so, I'll apologize in advance, because I'm from Alabama, and can't help it.

Not at all. I'm from Mississippi so to me it's a friendly term, I use it all the time as well as love, boo, hon and baby among others. And I've never had anyone say they were insulted or anything else. No appology necessary, we're from the same neighborhood.

Yes it does, unless it's an old relative. I don't like it if I go out and a guy grabs my hand/arm and calls me sweetie, honey, baby, etc. I have a name, and if you don't know it, ask. The reason I don't like it, is because I was in a horrible relationship, and when he was trying to be nice afterwards he would call me honey, babe, baby, mami. From then on, I always associated those terms of endearment with abusive men.

Depends on the relationship between me and that person. I don't appreciate a stranger calling me 'sweetie'.

It does, I admit. Especially if it's a complete stranger, for ex., at the airport. I am silently fuming.
But then again, I am ticked off when a guy opens the door for me... Just the way I am, I guess. No hard feelings.

Oh no, honey! It part of my vocabulary being from the South. It's used like nicknames here. My late Father in Law (from Chicago of course) hated it! I got my feelings hurt. :(

No. As a small sized smiley girl from Atlanta originally, I expect it :)
