One of the big current issues in Virginia is the controversy as to where to more the Confedarate museum. It is currently in Richmond, but they are considering moving the museum to Lexingtion, V.A. Alot of blacks are complaining that the museum is a symbol of rascicim, and do not want the museum to exsist at all, claiming that it is offending to them. For me, the museum is a symbol of our heritage, and if it bothers other people, that's just too bad. And I mean, really, why should this bother them, and why should we not be able to have the museum there? There really is no reason that we should have to bend our wills and be walking on glass just so we don't offend anyone.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a rascist, and I know slavery was a terrible thing, but this museum isn't pro- slavery.

Denying history is just idiotic. Jews would have a VERY good reason to demand that Auschwitz be demolished, some of the former inmates are even still alive - nobody is still alive from the US civil war. Yet Auschwitz still stands, as a reminder of what must _never be repeated_ To forget this, or deny it, is inviting for it to happen again.
I don't know exactly what the museum contains, but I find it highly unlikely that it's (overtly at least) racist. If it is indeed a celebration of the confederacy and a glorification of slavery and racism, then by all means tear it down. If it is a presentation of facts presented in a neutral way then it should remain. The fact that it is a museum of the conferderate states is just not good enough a reason for it to be racist. Does this mean the declaration of independence is racist because it was made at a time when slavery was legal in the US?

I visited that museum a few years ago. I whistled Dixie and bought a book with a 50 dollar bill there. It is on the same grounds as the Confederate White House. Maybe they are planning to expand the park surrounding the CWH or something. I believe it should stay somewhere in Richmond, after all, that was the capital of the Confederacy.

From my perspective as a man raised in the south, many folks living in the southern United States during the last century embraced the heritage of their confederate ancestors AND discriminatory racial politics. Symbols like the confederate battle flag where easy symbols to adopt for representing white southern pride. It was an easy target for those political organizations that opposed racism. Hence we are brought into today’s ongoing battles about what confederate symbols to allow to be displayed.
The unfortunate reality is that the formation of the confederation had little to do with slavery and more to do with the consolidation of federal power. The evolution of the confederation by society as a symbol of racial suppression is unfortunate as most people involved overlook the historical underpinnings of why so many fought in the war.

Its not just racism, it is a museum of treason. What if the Nazi museum wanted to move to a state in the US claiming its part of their German heritage?
How does a group of Americans celebrate a war fought to keep Americans enslaved and abused for free labor? Who wants to celebrate the rape of enslaved women and the selling of their children? Not to mention the attempted coup against the US government.
Stop trying to romanticize the most vile period of American history. Let it go...

It isn't. People make it racist because they don't like it. It's like Colonel Reb and the vote to redo the MS state flag.
