My father is 79 years old and when he tries to write his name his hand shakes. He has to use his other hand to hold his good hand steady. I was wondering if anyone has seen any special writing tools specifically used for people with nerve damage in their hands.

There are such implements made. Often they need to be specially fitted to the individual.

If your father has not had an Occupational Therapy evaluation or had one recently, I feel he is an excellent candidate for this. Ask his primary physician to order one for him. The Occupational Therapist can help with recommending the best implement for him. She/he can help you work with your insurance to see if and what is covered. She/he can, also, help him with other ADL (Activity of Daily Living) needs your father may have.

We have one of our business friends (Principal) from India who is having "writer's cramp" or similar sounding problem developed a few years ago.

He would put his signature by 'push-pull' of his entire arm while holding the pen between his fingers and the signature is drawn on the paper, like the work of Pantograph and such machines/devices where with the combination of 5 mechanical 'arms' the stylus on the template (piece of thin board or metal plate used as a pattern in cutting or drilling etc) would move the pointer which may have pen/pencil or a fine revolving tool affixed for making out the output conforming to the template.

This gentleman is a qualified engineer and was running his own business successfully, but the strange inconveniences have limited his ability to write now. I hope the solution as mentioned by Calina may work in such cases too, I am not sure.

I will watch the Answers to the Q so that I may be able to help my friend.
