I hate pet store or anywhere that encourages this treatment of bettas. however told you keeping a betta in a vase was a good idea is WRONG. as for whether it's a girl or not, it doens't matter, it's not going to hate you if you say it's a girl and it's not :)

bettas are solitary animals, he is not lonely (that's not to say in the right conditions they can't be kept in a community tank). what you're seeing is depression because he is in a vase.

putting a betta in a vase or bowl is like putting you in an unheated closet with no toilet. not very fun, right? well whoever is keeping in you will clean out the floor once a weekish so it doens't get too dirty, you gonna be happy then? of course not. you're still going to be cold, cramped, and in your own filth for many days.

bettas are TROPICAL fish, they need temps of about 80°F, so unless you like to keep your house super warm, your betta should be in a tank with a heater. as for the poop, would you want to swim around in your poop? get him a filter as well.

my suggestions before you go wasting your money on any other crappy betta craze gimmick is to get:
*a 2.5 gallon tank or a 5 gallon tank
*a heater (7.5 watt hydor mini heater for 2.5 gallons or a 25watt for a 5 gallon)
*a thermometer
*a small filter, try whisper filter for a 1-3 gallon tank, would work for the 2.5 or 5 gallon tank
*gravel, whatever kind you want,I prefer natural looking ones so the attention is on the betta, not the rocks.
*a few silk plants
don't jsut dump the betta in though, run the tank for a day or so to make sure the temp is good and steady. then put your betta in a bag and float the bag in the tank for an hour so he slowly gets used to the new temp.

pet stores encourage bowls and vases because bettas are hardy enough to live in them for a while. they make bettas seem like perfect no maintenance pets, but they aren't. no pet is. good luck with your betta.

You can't put 2 male bettas together. They are fighting fish. You can have multiple females, w/ one male. Males have the big fins, females are very small, just barly past their body. The person @ the pet store can help. By all means, decorate his space, rocks, fake plants and if you can do an air pump w/ a bubble stone, that would be nice. It keeps the water moving. There are dwarf frogs for aquariums, but I wouldn't recommend that in a vase, they will get out.

I would also recommend a floating live plant, I like "duckweed" its like grass that floats and they can hide and eat it. You don't have to take the food out after 5 mins, but be careful not to overfeed, they don't need much.

Cleaning in a vase is difficult, but I would suggest taking him out in a bowl of his own water, stir up the rocks to get the stuff moving and remove 80-90% of the water w/ the gunk. Its better to never completely clean their water and rocks, since there are good bacterias.

Good luck. They are so beautiful to look at.

you dont have to buy another tank just go to walmart or petsmart and buy a gold fish bowl and she would be happy that way she can eat and don't worry about gettin attacked! If a female that wasn’t ripe, or ready for spawning, would have entered a males tank, it’s possible that she would’ve been attacked, as non-ripe females are not tolerated within the vicinity of the nest. By not fleeing, a female indicates her readiness to spawn. Yes, some times if you are not careful when trying too breed bettas, the male will attack the female and he can injure the female, the females are much smaller than the males. A Male and a Female: In the wild, females stay clear of males, except during mating. When cohabiting in tanks, males might kill females, and are generally kept apart unless (a) they are juvenile siblings, (b) they are breeding, (c) there is a partition, or (d) the tank is large enough for the female to escape attack. Often, before breeding, breeders use such a container to allow female display without risking harm by the male. Two or more Females: Bettas are not schooling fish, but in a large tank with many hiding spaces, female bettas can cohabit. When two females share a tank, one usually bullies the other, however, four or more females will establish a hierarchy allowing peaceful co-existence, nevertheless, females living in community must be monitored for aggressive females.

I fish is either male or female... if it has long fins it's male and shorter fins, it's female... I suppose you could put a frog in, but alot aquatic frogs will grow big, like 5 inches. make sure to get something that won't get big, like an african dwarf frog, or the african dwarf clawed frog. which grow to 1.5-2" it is nicer if it has gravel and a plant though... and did you know bettas are the siamese fighting fish? so two will fight! the store you bought it at must of been retarded... good luck!

You can't put anything else in that vase. It will die quickly and horribly. Go buy yourself a nice 3g tank or larger.

Marineland eclipse systems are great for bettas and a frog or ghost shrimp or a pair of guppies is fine to add.

Do not put two bettas together, especial males (they have the long pretty fins). You should get it a small real plant (fake ones are okay too, but real ones add oxygen and help to filter the water, if real plants begin to rot though you need to take them out), and maybe a tiny bottom feeder, also a tiny snail (often come with the plant for free) If you get a snail though (around 50 cents) make sure it is a water snail and that the tank/bowl is covered or it might escape, but not likely because they like being in the water and they get food there, but also need air. The snail and/or bottom feeder if you choose to get them will really help to keep the tank clean. If you don't take uneaten food out you'll have to clean the vase more often. I suggest getting a small tank with a pump, also if you can afford it a plant, snail, and bottom feeder. If you wanna put rocks/gravel/ pebbles/etc. in boil them first, and let them cool, take out the water, and remove the fish before adding. Good luck.
