With college getting more competitive, don't you think the last thing we need is sexism? If a man and a woman both apply for a scholarship, the woman has a better chance of getting it and going to school. Women's rights activists fight for EQUAL rights, not the advancement of women over men. Do you think that the government should stop this and let men and women finally have equal rights.

Yes they should, an education is important for everyone not a gender if you truly want to be fair you have to make sure males get as many opportunities as females.

Let me guess. You and another girl at your high school applied to the same University. She got in with a scholarship and you didn't. Now you are bitter. Nevermind that she had better grades than you did or did more community service work or it was just a random luck of the draw. Clearly, there is a conspiracy against while males everywhere.

There is no evidence to suggest or even hint that women are given preference for scholarships more than men. In fact, you would think it would be the other way now that women outnumber men in colleges around the country. You want to talk about equal rights. How about fair pay for women in the professional field? Let's talk about how when you and that girl who beat you out for the scholarship graduate and apply for jobs, you could get the same job, do the same tasks and you'll still get paid more than her simply because she's a woman. You want equal rights? Talk about that.

Hang on; there's something odd in what you just said. Let's take it from here: a man and a woman apply for a scholarship; the woman would have a better chance of getting it because she's a woman. That in itself is a contridiction had I ever saw one. A woman were fighting for equal rights she knows she has to stand in line like everyone else and there is no special treatment. This is the true meaning of equal rights, not to get her way because she's a woman. Yes I think they should, the women have to stand in line just like the men; may the one who deserves the scholarship get it..

i think that men and women should be judged on their merrits and not their gender and i also believe that should go for politics etc. none of this " we want so many women attending college or we want so many women in politics - if you are good enough based on your merrits then you should get in and not based on gender this is equally insulting to me as a woman

I agree with you there. We shouldn't be basing college admissions, hiring, or recruiting on gender, race, sexualtiy, or anything of the kind. That should be determined solely by educational qualifications.

Uh, evidence for your claim?

What you're addressing, I think, is the idea of affirmative action which begins with the concept that equality can only occur on a level playing field ie: if every human has the same opportunities from birth.

This is not the case. Class, race, religion, dis/ability, sexuality and gender all intersect to shape the kind of educational, social and emotional landscape in which you grow up, and the opportunities that you receive.

Broadly speaking (ie: based on extensive statistical studies), until about 20 years ago, women were far less likely than men to pursue tertiary education successfully. It's still demonstrable today that, because of the way employment is structured, women are less likely to reach high level positions than are men, and women in similar positions to men earn less than their male counterparts.

The idea of affirmative action is to utilise a specific moment of leverage -- college entry scholarships, internships -- to redress the balance and create opportunities where there were none.

Women still do not have equal rights to men, in terms of wages, education, the right to control their own bodies, freedom from violence and many others.

Can you produce a peer-reviewed, published case or case study to demonstrate endemic sexism at the level of admissions in favour of women? Because I can produce dozens, if not hundreds, of studies from established journals showing that sexism still excludes women from social, political, educational and cultural equality.

Women are excellent liars. Women say the want equal rights, but it is a lie. Women march behind a banner entitled "equality for all", but when was the last time you saw women:

- marching on Capitol Hill demanding that women be included in The Draft?

- marching on Capitol Hill demanding that men be given custody of divorced children 50% of the time?

- marching on Capitol Hill demanding that women be required to take 50% of garbagemen or ditch-digging jobs?

I think NOW should be abolished...men are going to get so tierd of getting harrased by women who cry "sexist comment",that they are going to put women back in their place its just a matter of time....yes women get into college real easy..the reason is the NOW and orginizations like it have businesses and schools by the balls. the name NOW is pretty fitting as that the members want everything "right NOW!!" without saying please or even thank you to anyone. NOW is an orginization of taking unstead of earning.

I think that it should be illegal to have a gender and race box on scholarship and college applications. But, then what about your first name. That is a dead giveaway of someone's gender. Perhaps we just include last names, birthdates, and social security numbers?

At this point, pretty much all equal rights acts are going for anything but equality.

Jobs, college... None of it should even have gender or skin color included in applications.

Well, some jobs like hooters because I really don't want to see a guy with hooters.
