The 1st one I don't know but the 2nd one is the environment arround sth.For example in examining a Heat Transfer problem when we want to discuss the properties and condition of the media arround a certain object we say "ambiant's condition".i.e if you want to see the temprature changes of a small metal in a room ,the room is the ambient.
