This aquarium has been drilled and plumbed. It has a sump tank, pump, and a micro bag. I was told to use the micro bag for filtering and in the sump I could also place charcoal and bio balls. For you experienced hobbiest, would this work and do a good job or do I possibly need a wet/dry filter to place in the sump tank?

A photo would help, but it sounds as if you can assemble a wet/dry system within the sump tank quite easily. The biggest problem with just putting bags of material in a sump tank is that the water tend to flow around the bag instead of through the bag unless it's forced to flow through the bag. Building a series of baffles in the sump may be the best option.

the inch per gallon rule isn't really a rule that should be followed. a 1 inch guppy poops way less than a 1 inch oscar. if i were you, i would ditch 1-2 of the cichlids that you already own, because with the new fish, your bio-load will b much to heavy for any filteration.
