Marijuana was legal until 1937. During the Great Depression the population began blaming the depression on illegal Mexican immigrants taking all the jobs. Even though they were far from the only ones using it, the population associated Mexicans with marijuana. During this time, the government helped fund "Reefer Madness" which basically said marijuana will make a mild mannered person turn into a insane homicidal sex fiend. They also produced studies saying marijuana was associated with crime, violence, and the lower class. With the public believing this, the government made marijuana illegal. The source below has a pretty good article about this. This actually happened, and isn't some crazy conspiracy theory, by the way.
Personally, I believe marijuana should be legal and regulated just as alcohol is. I don't think it should be legal to be blazed driving down the highway or anything, but I don't see anything wrong with smoking at home or at a party. The effects don't impair you near as much as alcohol and a new market certainly wouldn't hurt the economy. Legalization would also lose money for the organizations such as gangs and terrorist groups who smuggle it into the country.
Some of the downsides of legalizing marijuana would be that taxes from marijuana sales may not make up for the money the government makes from arrests and tickets. Also, marijuana still being associated primarily with hippies and anti-government groups won't get it legalized any faster. I still wonder why the public has yet to be allowed to vote on legalization...

I think it shoud be legalized as well and here is why:
Do you know what Americas number one cash crop last year was marijuana? If the government would grow it, harvest it, package it and seel it, they would make a killing. That money could be used to balance the budget, pull us out of this deficit we are in. It could be sold in packs like cigerettes for around $30. You will need to be 21 and should not be alowed to drive a car while under the influence, just like alchol. The governement is pissing away all this money (they make up alot of it with fees associated with arrests from marijuana though) under the asumption that it is a drug. However, people buy alcohol and cigarettes every day. Which themselves cause cancer (which sometimes marijuana ia prescribed for sufferers of treatment for) liver damage, sorosis, enphazema, diabetes and high blood pressure. Yet marijuana is suposed to be so bad for you, right?
I think you are right about how many people do smoke pot.Its everywhere, seriously, everywhere! Its the one thing that you will find mo matter the class, income, color, gender.. Its everywhere.
I think it should be legal, but dont hold your breath.

I think it should be legal and alcohol illegal!! Smoking a joint--kicking back and relaxing versus a drunk on the road that doesn't even know what he's doing or where he's at!! Sad to say I've done both!! I'd much rather meet someone driving after smoking a joint versus meeting a drunk driving!! I don't drink alcohol at all anymore! I know alot of people that smoke but don't drink anymore either! Rich and poor!

I agree about the alcohol issues being legal. I think if most intelligent people look at what that has done to people's lives, you would think that would be illegal. It's all about politics. Regardless of what you choose to do because it's something you like, you'll defend it legal or not. There are consequences to pay in the end...one way or another.

Legalized Drugs?
Ok here is your hypothetical situation...you have 25K to spend (the amount it costs to keep a drug offender in jail for a year)
Do you jail the drug offender, or pay for your grandma's health insurance?

Why do waste so much time and recource banning drugs? who cares what adults do on their own time. If my mail man wants to go home and smoke opium every night, what businiss of mine, as long as I get my mail the next day? Protect kids, you say? Thas BS...if a 15y/o has 20$ it is far easier for him to get a bag of heroin than a bottle of whiskey...the drug dealers dont ask for ID. I think any drug any one wants ought to avaliable in controlled doses at the local pharmacy.

Either both alcohol and marijuana need to be legal or illegal. It's silly the way it is now.

Yeah, I do think it should be legalized. But the government would tax the hell out of it. I think they don't want to legalize it because it's too easy to grow on your own. I think it's alot safer than alcohol. Better than Prozac I think.
