I'm giveing my older computer to my friend and want to permanently remove things such as credit card details things from my job which i deleted using the reycyle bin. It has a lot of good applications and thigs on it so i don't want to go as far as clearing the whole disk. Is there a program that scans for deleted files and removes as opposed to just removing?

Yes

Install "Restoration"
Open. On menu select "Others" select "Delete Completely" Ignore warning and click yes then ignore next warning and click yes again.

It will run several hours and will overwrite all files that have been deleted making them impossible to recover. It will not delete any other files; your operating system and programs and will still work afterward.

Recover deleted files--or delete them for good--with this small program.

Restoration is a free program that can scan your hard drive, floppy diskette or USB thumb drive and find files that have been deleted (Windows doesn't actually destroy files that you delete: it just marks the space they occupy as being available).

Simply deleting a file doesn't guarantee that it can't be retrieved later, there are several ways of reconstructing such files. Normally deleting a file just removes the references from the local file system, but the file itself is undamaged (there's just no way to know where it is without scanning the hard drive). Secure deletion will overwrite the file with 0's (or sometimes random numbers)so its impossible to know what was there before.

No, your computer is cannot be cleaned using Ccleaner. Its only moves the data and does not offer a secure delete. You can use Ccleaner's Recova to recover all the data you think you deleted. And you should not sell the computer until you have performed a "secure delete" of the hard drive contents and free space. A secure delete encrypts all the information on magnetic media, thats your hard drive. Then deletes the information making it unreadable. It does this several times to make to make the information unreadable.

Shredding your hard drive will not work. Again with software this data can be retrieved. A secure delete is the on form of data removal endorsed by the US Department of Defense. I do work for a patent company we use Evidence Eraser. It cost about 25 dollars. There are only about six programs on the market that have past the US. department of disk santization. Its one of them. Here is a link for more info

No data is ever removed from the HD. It is simply overwritten. The better programs will overwrite the data 3 or more times making it extremely difficult to recover (notice is said "difficult" and not impossible). With the use of both of these programs you should be safe from someone getting information from your old HD. Remember, with enough expertise and a very expensive program some of your data may be recoverable.

One of the very best HD cleaners is Eraser. This program is free and very good.

SystemInternals, now owned by Microsoft, has a free file shredder. It is claimed that files shredded by this program are unreadable. They are not removed from the HD, just unreadable.

This will overwrite the data 20 times with a specific pattern of data that makes recovery extremely difficult. Its used by businessess who want to scrub their hard drives before selling them; its free for home use.
