I was supposed go give a speech in one of my classes, however, there was an out of state death in my family, a person who I was not very close to but still was obligated to go to the funeral, so I had to miss my speech. My teacher told me that there would be no grade deduction if I showed documentation of the death. What does this mean? I do not feel like I am in the place to ask for a death certificate, would an obituary do? What other documentations of death are there? Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm surprised your teacher requires such proof, usually they are very sympathetic; but perhaps they are required to show proof of why they altered a student's grade so dramatically.
A death certificate is certainly unnecessary; an obituary or a copy of the message that informed people of the time/location of the funeral would be sufficient. If necessary, you could always contact the funeral home or church and requested a letter on their letterhead stating that they did hold funeral services for (name) on (date).

Not sure what level of school you are talking about.
In most earlier grades, a note from your parent
should suffice.

In Universities, you might grab a copy of an article
from a something published on the web about your
friend's death.

Still, it doesn't prove that you were there, but ...

I think the obvious thing here is to ask the teacher
what he or she usually gets for such things, while
handing him an article discussing the demise.
He or she probably won't ask for anything more.

Do NOT cry or look pathetic. Just ask him what
they usually use.

An obituary should do, if it is clear that this person was related to you. In some religions, there are funeral cards given out, or there is some kind of a remembrance given out.

Get any picture of the funeral (and if you are in the picture: Bingo). Tell you teacher that everyone after death will join the largest family in the USA; the RIP Family. You can find the RIP family in every town and city in the USA. How about that!!!

When my foster father died, I was able to show the "program" (for lack of a better word) from his funeral to my supervisor. You may be able to request one from the funeral home or a relative, if you did not pick one up. If they did not have one at all, you may be able to get a letter from the funeral home director stating that you attended the service.

Take the obituary to the teacher.
