Because the marijuana movement doesn't have the lawyers and lobbyists that the tobacco industry does.

Good question. The main reason that is given, aside of what someone just said about the success of the tobacco industry's attorneys, is that weed impairs you (in addition to the personal health problems), and cigarettes do not. Thus, weed is seen as more dangerous to people, because it has the ability to effect more than just the user, but also those around them. For example, if you drive and smoke a regular cigarette, you are giving yourself cancer, but not hurting anyone else. It is a freedom of choice. If you take weed, you may or may not be gviing yourself cancer, but you also could hurt someone if you got behind the wheel of a car. Of course, this opens up a whole other question about the legality of alcohol, but you didn't ask about that!

Not saying one way or the other whether or not the legality of weed or cigarettes should be one way or the other. Just answering the question. :-)

It really is an interesting question. I believe it all stems from the 1930's. Weed was actually legal and alcohol was not. People of the day were introduce to it along with Jazz. The powers that be disliked this new music and demonized it and the drug that went along with it. This is where you get the weed exploitation movies like reefer madness, which we all know now to be totally untrue. These lies spread throughout America for about 3 decades. In the 60's a whole generation realized how "groovy" it was and thats when the Government stepped in and banned it for good. Should it be legal, yes, especially for those terminally ill.

The first guy is right. It's all about lobbying and since cigarettes got a bigger hold on the country first, it was able to oust weed and keep itself in.

Think about why you used to be allowed lighters and matches on planes.

Which particular weed are you referring to?

You know the answer might be that society views the two differently. Every time it is put to a vote in most states it has failed. Why do you think that is?

I agree with quelisto, your first responder.
It's all political. Also, pot grows like a weed. It will essentially grow anywhere. And it actually does have health benefits. And the FDA (note: Food & Drug Admin.) can't make any money if we are using things that get us well or help our health issues.
It only makes money off of us if we remain sick. We can't take their manufactured drugs if we are well.
It's pretty much as simple as that.
No money for the government, no legal use.
Plain and simple.

because we can't get the stoners off their butts and go vote for legalization. The government says there is a war on drugs, then it's high time we started taking prisoners.
